Notable comments from the Jacksonville Jaguars in the lead up to the Week 12 match vs. the San Diego Chargers.
On Philip Rivers…
“I’ll tell you what, the guy is phenomenal. I think what’s been impressive with him is that they’ve had some injuries at the wideout spot, tight end spot and he still stays the same—very, very productive. One of the top offenses in the league; he’s playing at a high, high, high level regardless of who’s in there. He makes that offense go. His precision. He commands (of) the whole offense. They go no-huddle and he runs that part of it as well so he just has complete control of the offense, knows defenses, the looks he’s getting and where to go with the ball.” – Head Coach Gus Bradley
“He’s definitely in that category of the older veteran quarterbacks that have been elite for a long time. It’s been impressive with everything he’s done over his career. There’s definitely a lot of things that he’s done very well and a lot of things to learn from. He is in that elite category.” – QB Blake Bortles
“He’s been in this league playing at a high level for a long time. He’s a vet, and he’s very seasoned. He understands who is on his team, and he uses that to the best of his ability.” – DE Andre Branch
“Obviously he brings a wealth of knowledge. He calls a lot of things from the line of scrimmage, gets them in the right plays (and) does a lot of checking so we have the utmost respect for him. He is a seasoned vet that is not only a seasoned vet, but he is a proven player that plays at a Pro Bowl level. He’s a tough quarterback (and) competes every snap. That’s what we love about him and it’s a tough task to defend him.” – DC Bob Babich
On CB Jason Verrett…
“Jason and I trained together in San Diego coming out of the Combine so I know Jason pretty well. I was impressed with him the whole time we were out there together. He was super impressive and he’s super impressive to watch on film. He’s not an overly big guy, but he’s a guy who plays big. You watch him week in and week out go up against bigger receivers and hold his own. He’s very impressive. He’s as good a corner as there is in the NFL and he kind of has all the tools to be successful and play at a high level.” – QB Blake Bortles
“He’s very good. We really liked him coming out of the draft. Just his overall spirit, intensity and how he plays the game. Very aggressive on the perimeter. Very athletic; he can run. He looks more and more comfortable with what they’re asking him to do and he just plays at a high level.” – Head Coach Gus Bradley
On TE Antonio Gates…
“Yeah he’s still a handful. He knows how to get open, he knows how to body you up (and) he knows where to put his body in position to make catches, so we have an awful lot of respect for him.” – DC Bob Babich
On SD Offense…
“It’s still a challenge because (the offense) takes shots. I know his average time of getting the ball off is under 2.3 seconds, so he gets rid of the ball fast but he takes his shots, too. That’s what he did against us last year.” – Head Coach Gus Bradley
“I think a team like that and obviously with a quarterback like Philip Rivers, they’re always going to be a contender and they can be in any game at any moment. We’re going to have to play our best and do everything as well as we can. Despite their record they are a talented football team that is very capable of being successful.” – QB Blake Bortles
On SD Defense…
“They’re a good football team. They’re trading players in and out. There’s not a lot of continuity that they’ve had on the defensive side of the football team. We’re expecting a really good football team that we’re going to have to face. They’ve lost a number of games by one score. They’ve only won two, but they’ve been in almost every football game. I would say continuity more than anything is the reason that they’ve given up so many explosive plays.” – OC Greg Olson
“They have some talent there. Some first and second round draft picks that are playing well (with) their effort and they’re flying around. You look at their games throughout the season and (it’s been) a lot of one possession games, similar to what we’ve been in. Those are tough because sometimes those games come down to one, or two, or three plays and your team is playing well but maybe just it didn’t go your way.” – Head Coach Gus Bradley
“I think they’ve done a good job. This is a team that the record can’t fool you. It never can in the NFL. No matter what a team’s record is in the NFL, they’re always going to be a good football team. The best in the world are playing. So, I think you can never get too caught up in records or anything like that. I think they’ve done a lot of good things….I think they have a lot of good players and I think they’ve made a ton of plays. We’ll have to be sharp and have a good plan.” – QB Blake Bortles
