The San Diego Chargers added depth to their defense on Tuesday, signing inside linebacker Joe Mays. To make room, the team released center J.D. Walton.
Mays is a 5-11, 244-pound veteran who’s played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs. He’s started 38 of his 69 career games, totaling 211 tackles, 1.5 sacks, six passes defensed and 29 special teams tackles over seven seasons. Initially a sixth-round pick by the Eagles out of North Dakota State, he spent this past offseason with the New York Jets.
Mays reunites with a pair of coaches in San Diego. He played in Denver when Chargers Head Coach Mike McCoy was a member of the Broncos’ offensive coaching staff. In 2011, he played in all 16 games for the Broncos with 12 starts while posting a career-high 74 tackles. More recently, Mays played under Assistant Linebackers Coach Bobby King with the Texans in 2013, having one of his finest seasons as he started 13 games and recorded 67 tackles, one sack and three passes defensed.
