Who Will Lead the Bolts in Sacks?
In order to further assist a stout secondary, the Bolts are banking on young talent to rush the passer in 2015. After not having a player reach double digits in sacks since Antwan Barnes had 11 in 2011, they are hopeful Melvin Ingram, Jerry Attaochu and Corey Liuget can lead the way.
Ingram has shown flashes of being a disruptive force getting after the quarterback. Unfortunately, he has been slowed by knee and hip injuries the last two seasons that limited him to only 13 regular season games. Ingram heads into 2015 in the best shape of his life, the Chargers have high hopes he can emerge into a top-flight edge rusher.
Meanwhile, Liuget led the Chargers with 4.5 sacks a year ago, which is an impressive feat for a defensive tackle. His ability to rush the passer from the interior is one of many reasons the Chargers extended the 25-year old on the eve of his fifth NFL season.
The Chargers will rely on others as well, including Kendall Reyes, Kyle Emanuel, Ricardo Mathews and Cordarro Law to name a few. However, the Chargers hope having Ingram, Attaochu and Liuget all on the field at the same time will strike fear into the heart of opposing quarterbacks.
