We’ll reveal our top 10 things to watch for at training camp each day leading up to the first practice on July 30.
Who Bookends Darrell Stuckey at Gunner?
For the past two seasons, Stuckey was bookened by Seyi Ajirotutu to form a potent pair of gunners in coverage. With Ajirotutu signing with the Philadelphia Eagles, there will be a highly competitive battle through the preseason and training camp for the opening opposite Stuckey.
As one of the league’s top gunners, Stuckey receives a ton of attention. The special teams’ captain is often double teamed, so the Bolts will rely on whoever lines up across from him to make plays.
While it may lack the sizzle of other position battles, it’s importance can’t be understated. Although Stuckey is confident someone will emerge, he is eager to find out who steps up to the plate.
“It is nerve-wracking because obviously I had a comfort level with Tutu,” he said during the offseason program. “We obviously had the opportunity to lean on each other the last two years, so I knew if I was doubled that he would effectively make the tackle or the play. I don’t try to think of it as replacing him, but more as upholding a standard. And I think we will. No matter what happens, as a gunner, I am setting a standard for what this team expects. We will expect the other gunner to play at (that same high level). You’ve got to be a chameleon out there and do whatever it takes to beat the guys in front of you.”
Locking down the opening at gunner could be a ticket to a roster spot as well. With only 53 available for the 90 Chargers in camp, proving your worth on special teams could earn someone a job. Read
