Wright on Secondary: "We've Improved a Lot"
Chargers cornerback Shareece Wright is looking to capitalize on his strong finish in 2013. In the middle of his fourth week of training camp, Wright approaches it as a way to get better, improve, and just take advantage of each and every opportunity.
“It gave me confidence,” Wright said. “To just finally get my hands on the ball and catch it just builds confidence to go out there (on the field) and make plays.”
The 5-11, 182-pound corner established himself last year playing in 13 games, starting each contest. He led his team in passes defended during the regular season (13) and posted 57 tackles, one tackle for loss and one interception.
His hard work continued in the post-season. In the team’s two playoff contests, Wright broke up five passes and recorded 10 tackles with one quarterback hit and one interception.
“We improved a lot,” he said. “We have more depth with players like Jason (Verrett) who was drafted in the first round and Brandon (Flowers) who they brought in who’s a great player. We definitely have a lot of guys who can cover well.”
While the players are the keys to the team’s success, Wright assured the work they’ve been doing in camp will translate to wins come the regular season.
“(We’ve) just been working together as a defense. Getting the ball, (creating) turnovers, getting pressure on the quarterback and playing collectively as a whole.”
Up next for Wright and the team is the second preseason game up in Seattle against the defending Super Bowl champs. Coincidentally, both teams will meet again in a month when the Seahawks come to San Diego for Week 2 of the regular season. As for his thoughts on playing a team twice within a short amount of time, Wright said he’s looking forward to the contest, but notes when they meet again, it’ll be when it “really matters.”
