Keenan Allen Picks Up Where He Left Off
Setting team rookie receiving records with 1,046 yards and 71 catches while leading all NFL rookies in catches, yards and touchdown catches (eight), it’s hard to forget.
Remember his mile-high leap into the end zone and how he closed out his Pepsi Next Rookie of the Year season with a six catch, 142-yard and two touchdown performance in the Divisional Round of the playoffs?
You’ll be happy to hear that number 13 has picked up right where he left off. Running routes and plucking the ball out of the air, Allen looks as smooth as ever.
While not much has changed between how last season ended and how training camp has begun, there are major differences between how last year’s training camp commenced and how this year’s has started. In 2013 he was a rookie buried on a depth chart that fans didn’t know much about. Now he is a top weapon earning some of the biggest cheers from the fans at Chargers Park, many of whom are sporting his jersey.
“It’s an amazing feeling to see people out there wearing your jersey and hearing your name,” he said. “But at the same time you have to be able to handle it and not let it get to you.”
Allen’s name has been thrown around by the media and fans as a rising star. Still, he doesn’t pay much attention to the accolades instead choosing to stay focused on improving every aspect of his game.
“It’s all about knowing what you want to do, and knowing what you’ve got to do to get to it,” he explained. “You come out here and just try every day to get better. That is as a player and as a team. To do that you have to work as hard as possible.”
