Freeney: "I'm Moving Better Than I Anticipated"
“I’m moving better than I anticipated,” Freeney said. “This is the first time I actually had to go against guys (on the field). To actually go out there and feel pretty much good is a good thing.”
Ever the realist, Freeney admitted time and fatigue could affect his leg. But for the time being, he feels great.
If you didn’t know Freeney was injured last season, Thursday’s practice wouldn’t have given away the information. He had significant burst during team and seven-on-seven drills. He recovered a loose fumble and showed explosive force off the edge, getting as close to making a real sack as one can in training camp.
Freeney spoke highly of General Manager Tom Telesco and the Chargers’ draft, saying that he’s never been on a team with more defensive depth. As he enters his 13th season in the NFL, Freeney explained he still plays with fire and a passion to show others he can still play and compete at a high level.
“For me, every time I step on that field I find a way to somehow put something in my head to where I have to prove something,” he said. “I think you always do to a certain extent. Prove to all the doubters you can still do it. Prove to the one guy that was born in 1992 that you can run faster than him.”
Along with his aggressive playing style, another great characteristic Freeney brings to the Chargers is his championship mentality.
“The goal is to win the championship. There is no better accomplishment than a team accomplishment. The gratification that you get from that, you can’t match that. You’ve got the (53) guys, the people in the building, the city behind you, there’s no better feeling than that. We’re going to try our best this year to have it this year.”
