Flowers Returns to the Field as a Charger
“It felt good getting back out there on the field with teammates,” Flowers said. “It felt good to knock the cobwebs off instead of being in a meeting room trying to learn the terminology. Just getting on the field making calls felt good.”
“I’ve still got to think of what calls to make, what terminology and what stuff that we do different in this defense,” he said. “It’s just going to be gelling as a nucleus. The chemistry has to be down and it’s about becoming one in the back end and as soon as we do that, we’re going to be on a roll.”
Flowers is clearly a welcomed addition to this defense. After spending six seasons in Kansas City, he joined San Diego off his first Pro Bowl season as a Chief. Defensive Coordinator John Pagano has mentioned that getting the defense to play more aggressively is a goal of his this offseason and Flowers already sees Pagano’s vision coming to fruition.
One of the players Flowers is looking forward to calling a teammate and not an opponent is quarterback Philip Rivers and it’s clear the two share a mutual respect for one another.
“(Rivers) is tough to play against,” Flowers said. “He kept me on my toes for six years straight so practicing against him, seeing his work ethic, and seeing how precise he wants everything is going to do nothing by sharpen my skills on the other side of the ball.”
“It’s nice having him in our color for a change,” Rivers said. “He’s a guy I’ve always respected from afar. He’s a real crafty, good corner, and having a veteran like that who’s had the success he’s had is great to get him in here.”
Despite the intra-division transfer, Flowers said the transition from red and gold to blue and gold wasn’t a problem and that he looks forward to getting on the field each day with his new teammates.
“As soon as I walked in the locker room we all had one mission, one goal at the end of the year and that’s to hold that trophy up” Flowers said. “I love these guys like brothers already so I just think the more camp goes on and on, everybody is going to gel more.”
