Keenan Allen is three weeks away from his second training camp where he’ll be under the tutelage of some of the top coaches in the NFL.
However, this week his role is reversed as he’s coaching over 100 military kids between the ages of 6-14 for a special football camp at Naval Base San Diego’s Admiral Prout Field.
“It’s different (being the coach), but it’s definitely fun,” Allen said with his trademark smile. “They learn just like we do. It may take one or two more reps, but they’re definitely getting it done…This is something I always looked forward to doing. It’s something I did when I was growing up. I liked to go to camps and see what guys do. The guys (here) are great. They all want to play football, have fun and ball around for a little bit.”
Allen was far from passive on the field. The wide receiver was extremely active and hands on, showing proper technique on how to run routes, throwing balls to the campers, explaining the best way to protect the football and much more.
Partnering with Procter & Gamble and the Defense Commissary Agency, the Keenan Allen Football ProCamp is a free youth football ProCamp for the San Diego Military Community. In addition to learning fundamentals from Allen and top area coaches, it also supports the Department of Defense Healthy Base Initiative by assisting service members, their families and civilians make healthier choices and live happier lives through nutrition and fitness.
While the campers relished the chance to interact and learn from Allen, perhaps no one described the excitement better than 10-year old Mason.
“This is just way cool I can’t even describe it,” he said excitedly. “I really don’t know how to describe any of this!”
