A: Great question! Since Flowers joined the club after the end of the offseason program, we weren’t able to see how Defensive Coordinator John Pagano plans to utilize the Pro Bowl cornerback. Any guess would be pure speculation. But I love that we are even having this conversation because it speaks volumes about Flowers’ versatility and ability to thrive in a wide variety of roles. He’s been successful playing both positions in the past. One thing I’m confident about is that Pagano knows best how to play to Flowers’ strength, so he should be a big addition to the secondary.
A: I’m a firm believer that you need to strike a balance between the two. One of Head Coach Mike McCoy’s final messages to the team before they left for their break was to relax and rest up because they are going to hit the ground running at a grueling pace once training camp begins. At the same time, you have to continue conditioning in order to be in peak form to succeed in the NFL but also to have a better chance of withstanding injury. From what I heard from most of the guys, it looks like they will take this balanced approach and be fresh and ready when they report for camp.
A: I thought Williams had a pretty solid couple months in the offseason program. This is basically going to be a rookie season for the speedy corner after missing all of last year with a pectoral injury. The main thing with Williams is he looks like he belongs and has natural ability. He is definitely a guy to keep an eye on when training camp starts to see how he develops.
Q: How into the World Cup are the guys? – Mike Salmons
A: Very! It was funny that after the most recent practices, the team bolted into the locker room to catch the end of the games on TV. In addition to rooting for the US, Keenan Allen in particular was very vocal, rooting on his adopted “FIFA” team, Brazil. Also, if you look on Twitter during or after any of America’s games you’ll get real time reactions from many of your favorite Chargers. I actually took it one step further and dreamed up an ideal soccer team from our 90 man roster. What do you think of my choices?
