Ryan Mathews is fresh off his finest season with the Chargers, setting career highs with 285 carries and 1,255 yards, averaging an impressive 4.4 yards per carry.
“I’m just trying to stay in shape,” he said. “I believe your body is your temple. You have to take care of that to be at the highest level that you can. That’s why the offseason is important.”
Mathews and Woodhead proved to be a potent pairing in 2013. The Chargers added a number of running backs to the mix with free agent acquisition Donald Brown, sixth round draft choice Marion Grice and a number of other rushers including Kerwynn Williams, Branden Oliver, D.J Adams and fullback Zach Boren. Mathews believes spending time with his fellow running backs will prove beneficial come the season.
As the longest tenured Charger in the group, Mathews is embracing a leadership role in which he leads by example.
“I think I’m a hard worker in everything I do,” he explained. “Guys ask a lot of questions, especially rookies. Grice asks a lot in the meeting room, which is good and I want to answer all that I can. The guys aren’t shy and I like that. I’m not the big “rah rah” guy who sits there and yells and screams. That’s not me. I lead by example and I’m trying to work my hardest. Hopefully people can see that.”
Many have chimed in about new Offensive Coordinator Frank Reich throughout the offseason, and Mathews was no different with his praise for the new Bolts play caller.
“It’s fun to play for him,” he said. “He knows a lot about this game. He’s throwing us in there left and right, and he’s like an offensive mastermind. He’s got a lot of stuff for us so it’s been fun to be around him.”
