Exactly one year ago Keenan Allen was in Tevin Reese’s shoes.
“The main thing I want to tell him, which was important for me, is to just be comfortable on the field,” said Allen. “Try to stay in your zone and play your game. Do your thing. Focus in on practice and it will make you comfortable come the games. Right now he is focused on going through every motion and learning the plays. That is very important (to) learn the playbook. Once you learn that you can get more comfortable.”
Reese graduated from Baylor this past weekend, becoming the first member of his family to do so. While his college days may be over, his NFL education is just beginning as he plans to be in Allen’s hip pocket learning as much as he can.
While Reese is eager to learn from last year’s Pepsi Next Rookie of the Year, Allen is equally excited about what the Baylor product brings to the offense. He believes it will open things up for more advantageous matchups.
“He is going to be able to stretch the field,” Allen said. “He is going to take the safety away from me and play deep to guard against his speed. That’s going to help me work one-on-one.”
So far its evident Reese possesses the same tireless work ethic as Allen. Although he had to miss rookie minicamp in order to attend graduation, he spent the entire time in the playbook and on the field continuing to work out.
“It would have been great to be at minicamp, but I don’t think I missed a beat,” he said. “Even when I was at graduation I had my playbook out studying it all the time. Then I went out and ran the routes too. Basically every time I had free time I was focusing on the playbook and what the team wanted me to focus on.”
