Te'o, Watt Relish Reunion in San Diego
Manti Te'o paid a visit to his alma mater earlier this offseason during Notre Dame’s spring game.
He spent time talking with his former teammates, including a number eligible for the NFL Draft. As they picked his brain, he joked that maybe one of them would join him in America’s Finest City.
Little did he know how accurate his words would be as the San Diego Chargers selected Notre Dame guard Chris Watt in the third round on Friday, reuniting Te’o with one of his closest teammates from his college days.
“It feels good to have him here,” the second-year linebacker said with a wide grin Monday. “That’s my boy! He’s a hard worker. He doesn’t say much and goes about his business. He’s a good kid and a real good player.”
It didn’t take long once the pick was announced for Te’o to reach out to his former, and future, teammate.
“I called him up and told him ‘Welcome to Bolt City,’” he said. “I figured if there was anyone who should welcome him it should be me. I’m very excited to have him here.”
The two met up in person Sunday afternoon as Te’o gave his friend a brief tour of the city.
“He took me to his apartment and showed me around town,” said Watt. “He took me to one of his favorite eating spots and gave me a real quick tour around San Diego. I really appreciated that. It shows what kind of guy he is."
While the two caught up, Watt explained Te’o emphasized that the rookie needs to get to work immediately.
“He really wanted to welcome me to the family, but he also said at the same time that it’s time right away to get to work,” he said. “This is a job and an important one. I appreciate that.”
Watt agrees with Te’o’s assertion that the rookie needs to hit the ground running in order to be prepared for the 2014 season. Still, the young guard considers himself lucky to enter a locker room where he already has one strong, ardent supporter.
“It’s great to have him here,” Watt said. “It’s just comforting to see someone you know, especially being the new guy around here. A familiar face is always good, especially when it’s a friend.”
