After selecting a pair of defenders in the first two rounds of the draft, the San Diego Chargers switched sides and added offensive line help in the third.Chris Watt out of Notre Dame. The 6-3, 321-pound offensive guard is eager to help San Diego’s interior line.
“I’m looking forward to getting to work,” he said. “I want to learn as much as I can from the veterans on this team and come in and do my best. I feel I’m very versatile in what I can do at the lineman position so I’m looking forward just to contributing what I can.”
While he is sound in pass protection, Watt’s biggest strength is in run blocking. He helped Notre Dame run for at least 200-yards in seven games in 2012.
Although he’s been a solid left guard for the Fighting Irish, he may get the eventual opportunity to play center. Tom Telesco said that Watt has taken some reps at the position and believes Watt’s intelligence can help him achieve that role.
“On the offensive line, smarts is very, very big,” he said. “He has all the intangibles and smarts and initial quickness to do it (play center).”
“(Left guard) is the position that I played the most in college,” Watt said. “I played right guard my freshman year and center is something I also played a little bit in practice but it’s something I’ve been working on pretty hard this offseason. Coming in here, I’ll be cross-training at the guard and center position and I’m ready for it.”
“Manti called me and we had a great conversation,” Watt said. “He told me ‘You’re going to love it here and there are a lot of great guys on this team, you’re going to be welcomed.’ He said the environment reminded him a lot of Notre Dame, so I’m really looking forward to seeing him.”
One of the reasons he’s looking forward to seeing him is to relive their Notre Dame practices.
“We butt heads a little bit in practice on some of the inside zone plays so it’ll be fun to do that some more.” Read
