The San Diego Chargers traded up to select OLB Jeremiah “Jerry” Attaochu in the second round with the 50th overall selection. Within 10 minutes of being drafted he called Chargers.com to give his first interview as a member of the San Diego Chargers.
Attaochu: I got a call from Tom Telesco and the staff. They said they were making a move to trade up to get me.
Chargers.com: That has to be a special feeling to know a team wants you so badly they will trade up to make sure you don’t slip away.
Attaochu: That’s awesome! They’re getting a first round talent. That is what they can expect. They made a good move.
Chargers.com: How familiar are you with the San Diego Chargers and this defense?
Attaochu: I’m very familiar. (Linebackers) Coach (Joe) Barry visited me and we had a good talk. I’ve played in a 3-4 and I’m very familiar with it. I can also play defensive end on third downs like I know they like to do. I fit this system very well.
Chargers.com: You were injured and couldn’t compete at the Scouting Combine. How frustrating was that for you?
Attaochu: I tore my hamstring at the Senior Bowl so I couldn’t participate. It was very frustrating. That’s the biggest stage as far as pre-draft analysis so that did hurt. But I rehabbed it and worked out at my pro day.
Attaochu: You’re going to get a hard working player. A very talented, very intense and emotional player. I guarantee you that is what you will get every single day. I come to work every day and do my job. I’m a leader. I’m going to do all that and more.
Chargers.com: You are known as a pass rush terror. How much pride do you take in that?
Attaochu: I did it 31.5 times in college, more than anybody in Georgia Tech history. And there have been a lot of great players to come out of my school. So I take a lot of pride in it and I’m going to do a lot of it in the NFL.
Chargers.com: What else besides getting after the quarterback do you pride yourself on?
Attaochu: I’m very athletic and versatile. I can do anything you want me to do on the field from the outside linebacker position. So the versatility is there. The scheme fit is there. And I have the ability to learn the system quickly. It’s a great fit.
Chargers.com: How does it feel to get to learn from a guy like Dwight Freeney?
Attaochu: That was one of the first things the coaches told me! They said I’m going to learn from one of the best in Dwight Freeney and the other guys. So that’s awesome and a great opportunity.
Chargers.com: Many fans on Twitter want to know if you’re ready to get after the quarterbacks in the AFC West like Peyton Manning, Alex Smith and Matt Schaub.
Attaochu: Those guys are great quarterbacks, but they won’t run anywhere. I plan on making a living sacking those guys.
Chargers.com: Finally, what do you want to tell all the Chargers fans out there right now?
Attaochu: Get ready. It’s going to get fun real quick!
