Bolts Trade Up, Select OLB Jerry Attaochu in 2nd Round
For the second straight draft, the San Diego Chargers traded a fourth round pick to move up seven slots in the second round to select a linebacker.
We'll have more on the versatile linebacker shortly. In the mean time, here is the prospect profile we wrote on him a few weeks ago.
A star outside linebacker during his time at Georgia Tech, Jeremiah Attaochu possesses the type of versatility defensive coordinators covet as they get more creative in their schemes. That’s why during Senior Bowl practices, he took reps at outside linebacker, inside linebacker and defensive end with his hand on the ground.
Attaochu made a quick impact at the collegiate level, registering 23 tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks in a reserve role as a true freshman. He steadily improved each season, and as a senior, dominated by recording 45 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks. Overall, Attaochu set the Yellow Jacket record with 31.5 career sacks, which also ranks fifth in ACC history.
Capable of playing defensive end in a 4-3 defense, many project Attaochu to be most lethal at outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. A student of the game, he has a natural knack for getting after the quarterback. He is also extremely competitive with a fiery persona he uses to his advantage. Attaochu is athletic with great initial burst and closing speed to get after even the most mobile quarterbacks. While some claim he needs to be a more consistent tackler, the 6-3, 252-pounder flashes the ability to explode into his target. Finally, Attaochu is also a two-way player who is stout against the run.
Attaochu was unable to participate at the NFL Scouting Combine due to a hamstring injury he suffered during Senior Bowl practices. However, that shouldn’t hurt his draft stock as scouts know just how dangerous an outside linebacker he can be at the next level.
