In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2014 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on May 8th.
We continue the series with a scouting report of Virginia Tech’s Kyle Fuller.
School: Virginia Tech
Weight: 190 pounds
Tough, physical corners are all the rage in the NFL these days, and to that end Kyle Fuller fits the bill. Add in his athleticism and superb ball skills and you have a prospect making waves in the lead up to the NFL draft.
Despite missing the back half of his senior year due to sports hernia surgery, Fuller had a strong season in which he was named to the All-ACC Third Team. In seven games he recorded 24 tackles, 10 passes defensed, two interceptions and one forced fumble. Fuller’s best season perhaps came as a sophomore when he was a Second Team All-ACC pick, notching a career-high 65 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, nine passes defensed, two interceptions and one forced fumble. For his career, he totaled 173 tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss, 32 passes defensed, six interceptions and four forced fumbles.
Fuller is a true ball hawk. He excels at locating and tracking the ball, and with exceptional leaping ability attacks it in an aggressive fashion. The Hokie enjoys the physical nature of the position, playing with a toughness above his 6-0, 190-pound frame. Fuller also enjoys mixing it up in the run game, astutely navigating through blockers to either help set the edge or unload on the running back.
Despite being regarded as a physical corner, Fuller could add some strength as he posted just 12 reps on the bench press at the Scouting Combine. Overall, he’s the type of tough competitor and valued leader that coaches and teammates love to have on their team.
