Charger Girls Tryouts Bring Out Over 300 Hopefuls
The music blasted and dance counts called out as more than 300 hopefuls attended the 2014 Charger Girls Auditions at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on the campus of the University of San Diego Sunday. Each and every one of them came with dreams of cheering on the Bolts on the sidelines of Qualcomm Stadium next year.
However, only a select few will be able to make the prestigious squad.
“We are looking for the complete package,” Charger Girls Director Lisa Simmons said. “In particular, we are looking for crowd appeal, showmanship, dance and cheer background. A lot of women have a competitive cheer background and a studio dance background, so it’s great if you can bring that and showcase that to the judges.”
Dancers stretched and took part in a quick warm-up before learning the steps of a new dance routine. After several run-throughs with the choreographers, hopefuls auditioned in trios before a panel of judges that included members of the Chargers front office and San Diego area entertainers.
Following the first audition, the number of hopefuls was cut down to less than 200.
From there, the dancers learned the second half of the dance routine, which included an array of spins, twirls and jumps.
Then it was time for the moment of truth to see who would advance to the finals on Wednesday and Thursday, and be that much closer to one of the 28 coveted spots on the 2014 Charger Girls.
The hopefuls introduced themselves to the judges and completed the full dance before stepping to the side and waiting nervously to hear if their number was called to advance.
By the end of the day, only 71 dancers remained.
“As long and stressful as the day can be, it’s incredibly exciting for us as an organization,” Simmons said. “Year after year, to see hundreds of women show up and want to be a part of this program and represent our brand and our club, it’s just really rewarding for us. All around, it was a really successful day. It was really hard for us to only narrow it down to 71 going into finals.”
For some, the day was a dream come true: the chance to audition for the Charger Girls and advance.
“It’s pretty exciting,” said Bridget, one of the many auditioners. “I’ve wanted to do this so long, it’s kind of surreal. It’s such an accomplishment. I’m so excited to see where this goes. I’ve had so much fun dancing today.”
Monday through Wednesday, the finalists will take part in one-on-one and group interviews regarding the San Diego Chargers organization, the Charger Girls and general questions about being a member of the team. On Thursday, the finalists will perform the routine taught at the preliminary audition before performing their own original routine individually.
Following Thursday’s final dance audition, we will have our 2014 Charger Girls squad which will be revealed to the public at the end of the week.
