Mailbag: No Rest for the Weary at Chargers Park
Q: What’s the offseason like over there? Everyone resting up at Chargers Park for a big year? – Shawn Plum
A: Rest? What rest? While it isn’t at the level it gets to during the season, it has been incredibly busy here at Chargers Park. General Manager Tom Telesco and his staff have been in constant meetings since January, preparing for both the draft and the free agency period that has slowed down. Likewise, Head Coach Mike McCoy and his fellow coaches are hard at work game planning for the 2014 season while also determining which prospects available in this year’s draft fit their system. Both the scouts and coaches are flying around the country to attend pro days garnering as much information as possible about those prospects available for next month’s draft. Also, in the coming weeks a certain number of prospects will be allowed to visit Chargers Park as well. It’s not only a busy time for the Bolts, but also an important one.
Q: Yo Rick. You got a chance to talk to the new free agents. What about them stuck out to you? – Geoff Grey
A: Both Jordan and I had the chance to chat separately with
Q: Last year's draft class was spot on. Does Tom Telesco feel pressure for this year's draft class to live up to the success he found last time? – Harold Mulder
A: Good question. When Telesco fielded fan questions during the Scouting Combine in February, he was asked this exact same question. Here is what Telesco had to say:
“Each year is about trying to get better than the previous year. We had nine wins last year with a lot of young players playing, so that’s a good thing. I’m certainly not one into grading the drafts, but we had nine wins with a young crew. We have a process for the draft that we use, so we’ll stick with that process and hopefully it pays dividends.”
I interpret his answer as saying that he has a set philosophy on how he approaches the draft, and he’ll use his system this May the same way as he did in 2013. I also liked how Telesco said he isn’t into grading drafts. He is focused on one thing – winning. That’s the barometer he uses in determining the success level of a draft. While most fans and media analysts will inherently compare this year’s draft class to last year’s crop as soon as the final selection is made, don’t expect Telesco to do so. For him, all that matters is how much they can help the team win in 2014 and beyond.
Q: When does the schedule come out? – Craig Bradley
A: This is a popular question and with good reason! It shouldn’t be too much longer until we find out the Bolts schedule for the upcoming season, as it has traditionally been released in mid-to-late April. That’s not definitive but based on the past it should be here in a couple weeks. Still, the Chargers do know who they will be playing and one thing for sure is that it will be an exciting year at Qualcomm Stadium! So don’t miss your opportunity to be there in person to see what year two of the McCoy/Telesco era has in store. Read
