They made some mistakes early.
They found themselves in a deficit, needing a mad scramble at the end to give them a chance.
The entre NFL world gave up on them, but the Chargers never gave up on themselves.
They rallied, showing tremendous heart to nearly shock the entire football world.
The above scenario not only applies to the 2013 San Diego Chargers season, but it is exactly how Sunday’s Divisional Round loss to the Denver Broncos played out. In essence, the 60 minutes of football was a microcosm of the entire year.
Let’s look at how they mirror each other.
Over the course of the season, the Chargers had some heartbreaking losses early in the year. They found themselves in a 5-7 hole that odds makers said gave them less than a 1% chance to make the postseason. But always having faith, the Bolts rattled off four straight wins over the final quarter of the season before winning in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs. Unfortunately, their run came to a halt as they fell 24-17 to the Denver Broncos.
The Bolts made a number of uncharacteristic mistakes early, found themselves in a huge hole before using the final quarter to climb out of it. Never giving up hope, they gave themselves a chance late with big plays, but once again, they unfortunately weren’t able to pull out the miraculous win.
“I definitely feel today was (a microcosm) of our season,” said D.J. Fluker. “Nobody gave us a chance to be where we are now. Nobody probably gave us a chance to come back the way we did. Even though we came up short, we made a statement again. We are resilient and we will always believe.”
Like many of his teammates, Thomas Keiser agreed that the game seemed to mimic the season as a whole.
“We came into the game like we came into the season, with not many people giving us a chance,” he said. “As the season progressed it stayed that way, but then we rallied to get into the playoffs when all hope seemed loss. The first playoff game we let people know we’re here. Going against a very good Broncos team, we started off the game poorly but we rallied back. There was some good stuff out of it. It’s a point to build off of.”
But in the end, the team can look back at the season as a whole seeing how much there was to be proud of and more importantly how much they have to build off according to Ronnie Brown.
“For us to be 5-7 and then win the last four games of the regular season and win a playoff game, that was big. Even today we started off slow. We were down to the Broncos 17-0 in the fourth quarter and we fought to get back into this thing. I think it showed a lot about the character of this football team. I think the upside for this team is very high.” Read
