The San Diego Chargers on Monday placed John Phillips on the reserve-injured list due to a knee injury sustained in Sunday’s win over the Oakland Raiders. In a corresponding move, the team signed tight end Jake Byrne off the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad.
A 6-4, 258-pound product of Wisconsin, Byrne was on the Chargers’ practice squad at the beginning of the year before he was signed off of it by the Houston Texans. He appeared in seven games for the Texans but did not record a catch. He was released by the team on December 13..
In his first season in San Diego, Phillips appeared in 15 games making six starts. He caught four balls for 30 yards while excelling as a physical blocker in the rushing attack. Over four seasons, Phillips now has 34 catches for 248 yards and two touchdowns.
