The first touchdown scored by the Bolts was a tremendous one by Keenan Allen. The rookie wideout darted his way toward the end zone, leapt over a defender and drove his body into another to hit pay dirt. Then, the rookie wideout scored another TD late in the first half. Another star on offense was Ryan Mathews. The Bolts leading rusher tied his career-high in carries set four days ago with 29, this time good for 127 yards and a touchdown. It was his fifth time over 100 yards this season, which is tied for most in the NFL. He also eclipsed 1,000 yards on the season. Read all about how Mathews displayed his punishing nature on a national stage. Then, watch Mathews’ touchdown run as well as an 18 yard gain early in the game before hearing from him in the locker room.
Vincent Brown has been eclipsed by some star performances in the passing game by the likes of Allen, Antonio Gates, Eddie Royal, Danny Woodhead and Ladarius Green. On Thursday, he came through with some incredibly clutch catches, highlighted by a diving 32-yard reception on a key third down early in the second half. Read about his performance in the clutch, then watch the big, sprawling third down catch followed by his post game comments.
Of course, the man who makes it all tick is Philip Rivers. Take a look at some of his best plays from the game below, then check out his interview with the NFL Network that has made waves nationwide.
On the flip side, the Chargers turned in a defensive effort for the ages. They kept the leading offense in the NFL to just 20 points, including only 18 yards on the ground. Defensive Coordinator John Pagano’s unit held Peyton Manning and the Broncos to just 2-of-9 (22%) on third downs, and forced numerous three-and-outs. Overall, they mastered the critical plays to get the win.
Without a doubt, the biggest defensive play of the night was Thomas Keiser’s interception. Corey Liuget got in Manning’s face and hit his arm as he threw, causing the ball to float in the air as Keiser slid under for the pick. The interception buoyed the Bolts to victory, and you can watch it below.
Another huge momentum shift came in the second quarter. The Bolts defense was outstanding, as the Broncos gained minus-one yard, went three-and-out three straight times and Keenan Allen scored his two TD’s in the frame. The Chargers went from being down 10-3 to up 17-10 heading into the half. Check out why the team felt it was a momentum shifting 15 minutes of action.
