As the Chargers’ caravan rolled out of the practice fields after one last walk-through prior to Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins, there was one pit stop to make before returning to the team hotel.
The U.S. Capitol.
Chargers’ players, coaches and staff got a special, behind-the-scenes tour of one of the most important buildings in the country. Guided by California Congressman and House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, the Bolts sat on the floor of the House of Representatives, soaking in all the history that has occurred in the very chamber the President gives his annual State of the Union. From there they saw Statuary Hall, the Rotunda and other famed parts of the Capitol.
“This is really fabulous,” said Chargers President Dean Spanos. “I can’t thank Congressman McCarthy enough for the tour. The players were awestruck, so it’s really kind of neat and I think the team really appreciates the opportunity to be here.”
It’s true that each and every Charger relished the unique experience. As proof, here’s a taste of some of their reactions after the tour :
Head Coach Mike McCoy: “This is a great opportunity for everyone to see the history. It was a great experience to see some things that nobody else gets to, so we’re very fortunate. It’s an honor to be here, and I think a lot of the players understand it’s an opportunity of a lifetime to take the tour that we’re taking.”
Quarterback Philip Rivers: “This is special. I think any time you can see the history of our country and see the place that had a lot to do with making our country what it is today, that’s special. Sitting there in the House and being where bills are passed or shot down and getting to be on the balcony overlooking the city and being where the President is sworn in, it’s been a good experience for all of us.”
Safety Eric Weddle: “Just the history of the place is great. The thought that this has been around nearly 200 years is beyond comprehension. It’s crazy. The depth, the descriptive pictures and the statues; it’s amazing.”
Cornerback Derek Cox: “This allows us to take a look back at American history that was started from the ground up. It brings us all back to where it began. This is a cool little field trip. It takes me back to being in school. It’s a nice experience and I’m glad to be a part of this. I don’t think any of us would get this opportunity if we weren’t with the Chargers, so I’m very thankful.”
Wide Receiver Vincent Brown: “This is a great experience. This place has so much history. You hear about what’s gone on here since you were a kid and read about it growing up, so to be here and see everything is a great thing. It’s nuts. It’s funny, the House floor looks a lot bigger on TV of course. Everyone was saying that. It’s been really great to be here and I’ll remember this for a long time.”
