Lance Alworth calls the 1963 Chargers team the greatest team he’s ever been a part of.
However, he did win the 1971 Super Bowl as a member of the Dallas Cowboys. But in 1988, he unfortunately had his 1971 Super Bowl ring stolen and lost for what he thought would be forever. However, after nearly 25 years with the help of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, Encinitas Station, Alworth was reunited with his championship ring this Tuesday.
“I’m just totally shocked to have this ring after all these years,” Alworth said after he was presented with it at a press conference. “I thought I’d never see it again, and here it is.”
In the late 1980s, the Hall of Fame wide receiver allowed his friend, the owner of Trophy’s Restaurant in Mission Valley, to display the ring along with other notable pieces of sports memorabilia. Along with a Babe Ruth baseball, the ring was stolen. It wasn’t until this past year that Alworth had hope of ever seeing it again. On September 7, a woman called him and offered to return the ring for a hefty sum. Alworth wisely contacted the police and a little over a month later the ring was returned. In the meantime, the Sherriff’s Department is seeking felony charges against two perpetrators and possibly a third.
Still, while Alworth is happy to have his Super Bowl ring back, it doesn’t hold a candle to how special his AFL championship ring from the 1963 Chargers is for him. In fact, after Tuesday’s press conference concluded, he slipped his hand into his pocket and with pride took out the AFL championship ring to showcase.
“This is a pretty special ring,” Alworth said. “The Super Bowl ring is great, but this one is one of a kind. The AFL championship ring, there aren’t many of those floating around, so it’s pretty special.
