Kenny Albert: "I'm Really Impressed with Philip Rivers"
With only two NFC games a year at Qualcomm Stadium, the popular FOX commentary trio of Kenny Albert, Daryl Johnston and Tony Siragusa haven’t broadcast a Chargers game in seven years. That changes this Sunday when the Dallas Cowboys come to town.
After spending all day with the Chargers on Friday, I met up with Albert to get his thoughts on the upcoming game as well as what he saw at practice.
Here is what he had to say:
“We haven’t done a Chargers game since 2006, so asides from Philip Rivers and a couple other guys it’s a whole new team. I’m really impressed with Philip Rivers. I was impressed by him today. I’m looking forward to seeing him out there. Back in 2006 it was his first year as a starter, and he’s really matured over his years in this league. I’m looking forward to watching him play.
I’m also looking forward to seeing Danny Woodhead play. Being from the New York area I saw him play with the Jets and the Patriots, and he’s one of those guys when you first look at him you think there’s no way he can be a professional athlete, but he is really one of the most fun guys to watch. And on the defensive side of course there is Dwight Freeney and Eric Weddle. So I’m looking forward to seeing a team we don’t get to see very often.
I had met Mike McCoy a couple of times when he was in Carolina, but we didn’t get to spend as much time with him like we did today. He’s very organized. I think it’s obvious he’s had a plan for a while coming into his first season as head coach, always thinking ahead. Listening to him talk today about the different coaches that influenced him, he even went back to when he was five years old starting to play football up through high school and now in the NFL. He mentioned Dan Henning who was always a guy that we enjoyed talking to. It was a pleasure to sit down with Mike McCoy today. He was very cordial. You could tell even during practice when he came over to talk to us, I was very impressed by him. Very impressed.
When it comes to the game, I think a lot will depend on the offensive line with the injuries going on. But defensively, against the Cowboys offense, we saw them last week and they have so many explosive players. Who do you put the focus on? Do you focus on DeMarco Murray who rushed for 175 yards last week? Do you focus on Dez Bryant? Do you focus on Jason Witten? Or Tony Romo? So I think it is really one of those pick your poison situations because they really do have one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL.
I think both teams play games that come down to the end. The Chargers have played three games that came down to the end, and ever since Jason Garrett took over the Cowboys, they’ve played the most games decided by less than seven points in the league. So I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a close game, and it should be a lot of fun.”
