All 28 members of the Charger Girls stood in a group in front of the stage. Many held hands and whispered to each other. There was anxiety and excitement in the air.
Before them stood three easels on a stage, each covered with a black sheet as to not expose what was underneath.
It was the moment of truth. This is the moment each girl was waiting for since June.
Who would be on the cover of the 2013-14 Charger Girls Swimsuit Calendar? None of the girls knew.
It was time.
As the black sheets were pulled from their easels, the girls reacted with screams and hugs. Finally they were able to see the fruits of their labor.
Wednesday night at the House of Blues in the Gaslamp District marked the unveiling of the 2013-14 Swimsuit Calendar.
With Chargers staff, sponsors, family and friends in the crowd, each Charger Girl saw their picture that would grace one of the pages of the 16-month calendar and realized a life-long dream.
“I’m super excited,” said Charger Girl Lindsay. “We’ve been waiting since June, since the photo shoot. I couldn’t sleep last night. I just woke up and I was like ‘Oh my gosh, I’m so nervous,’ but most of all, I’m just super excited to see all the beautiful girls.”
To some, seeing the end result of the calendar allowed them to reminisce about their enjoyable experience shooting the calendar.
“My favorite part was hanging out with the girls during their shoot,” said Kylie, another member of the squad. “It’s a little nerve-racking to get up there and pose in front of a camera, but the girls are blasting music, cheering you on, and that’s the best part about it.”
This year’s calendar theme revolved around the military went past a camera and swimsuits. The girls took the process of shooting the calendar one step further, which made it that much more special.
“This year, my favorite part of shooting the calendar was how into the process the ladies got,” said Charger Girls Director Lisa Simmons. “Shooting a military-themed calendar, the ladies reached out to family members, grandmothers, grandfathers, brothers, dads that have served in the military. They brought pieces from their military life into each shoot, which was really cool. We had a lot of ladies shoot with their grandfather’s hats or their brother’s vest, and it was just kind of that added touch that makes the calendar really unique to the San Diego community and the Charger Girls.”
