UPDATE (2:27pm) - San Diego Chargers wide receiver Eddie Royal sustained a bruised lung during the team’s practice on Saturday morning. He is also being evaluated for a concussion. All subsequent tests were negative.
Eddie Royal made a spectacular catch during the team portion of practice today but came down hard.
The team was in the red zone when Royal ran a route toward the right sideline. Number 11 leapt in the air and plucked the ball away as he made contact with a defender, landing squarely on his back with a thud. He stayed down for the briefest of moments before walking back toward the huddle. As his teammates congratulated him for making the tough catch, Royal gingerly made his way over to McCoy and the training staff. After talking with them for a bit, he walked toward the locker room, stopping half way there to kneel down. Team doctors attended to him and moments later an ambulance came onto the field. Royal was put onto a stretcher and sent to the hospital.
After practice, Coach McCoy addressed the event saying the following:
“Eddie obviously went up for a ball, caught the ball, landed on his back and (had) shortness of breath and a little bit of a hard time breathing. So we’re going to take him to the hospital and check him out. That’s all I’ve got right now. I can’t tell you anymore. I don’t know a whole lot about it other than that.”
