Throughout training camp, we’ll be giving Chargers players the opportunity to talk directly to you, the fans, with blog entries of their own. Today’s entry is from kicker Nick Novak.
One of the most popular questions I get is how I approach a game winning kick. Fans always want to know if I put any added any pressure on myself, and I don’t. I don’t approach it any differently from any kicks whether it’s an extra point or a long field goal. No matter where it’s at on the field I have confidence in my holder and my snapper that we’ll get the job done together. It’s really just another kick to me. I practice those situations at practice so I’m prepared and don’t feel any extra pressure or anxiety. It’s just like kicking a routine field goal.
My favorite part of being a kicker is I get to go out there and do my part to contribute to a win. I love the competitive part of the position. You prepare for everything during the week, but you never know what you’re going to get on game day. I love that I can be a part of what makes our team successful. There are few better feelings than contributing to a win.
During the offseason I held a bunch of camps for young kickers, mostly high school aged. I love to coach and love to give back. We had some coaches in the San Diego area come out and donate their time. It’s a free camp and it’s just a great thing for all of us to give back. We’ve all had people who have helped us get to where we are now in our careers, so when I get the opportunity to give back in the offseason it is important to me.
Thank you for reading this. The fans play an integral role in our success on Sundays. Having a 12th man out there is important to our success and getting wins. The louder and more hostile we make our stadium, the better it is for us and the fans do a great job of doing that for us. There is nothing like running out of the tunnel or coming to Qualcomm and seeing a packed stadium. That environment on Sundays, there really is no other feeling like it.
