From now until the start of training camp, Jordan Beane and I will be previewing each position for the San Diego Chargers.
We continue the series with a look at the linebackers.
Looking to build on another outstanding season is inside linebacker Donald Butler. Despite missing four games due to a groin injury, Butler still accumulated 94 tackles, ranking third among Chargers defenders. He will be joined in the middle be Manti Te’o, the highly touted Notre Dame standout who the team selected in the second round. Another newcomer is outside linebacker Dwight Freeney, one of the most prolific pass-rushers of the last 10 years. He will be bookended by steady veteran Jarret Johnson, who is a popular figure in the locker room.
Other linebackers on the roster include returning veterans Bront Bird, Larry English, Andrew Gachkar. Jonas Mouton and Phillip Dillard, free agent signees Thomas Keiser and D.J. Smith, sixth-round draft choice Tourek Williams and undrafted free agents Frank Beltre, Dan Molls and Devan Walker.
Last year’s first round draft pick Melvin Ingram suffered a torn ACL during a minicamp practice and figures to miss an extended amount of time.
