For most Chargers, the weeks between the end of mini camp and the start of training camp is about seeing family, taking a vacation or just relaxing before the hard work begins.
For Antonio Gates, it was about hanging out with Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges.
Fresh off his cameo in “The Biggest Loser”, the tight end joined The Dude (or el duderino if you’re not into the whole brevity thing) in the casting room for Bridges’ upcoming movie “R.I.P.D”. Appearing along side other sports notables like John Wall and a French-speaking Joakim Noah, Gates tried out for a role as Bridges’ ghost cop avatar in the upcoming supernatural flick.
Looking for someone who can “portray his essence”, Bridges and Gates have a few give and takes throughout the piece with Bridges asking Gates to be funny. Gates responds with a deadpan, “I’m funny” and a menacing, “want me to come over there and show you I’m funny?” over the course of at least 12 takes (according to the film slate). Though it’s a brief appearance, and Gates may not be the next Daniel Day-Lewis, his take on “athlete who thinks he’s funny but is not” is probably the best acting work of all the stars in the clip.
Also if Bridges was looking for humor from the tight end, he only needed to check out his 2009 appearance on “The League” to see his range. Who knows, maybe when Gates is all done with football, he’ll walk off the field and onto a sound stage.
