Mailbag: Unsung Leaders and Go-To Targets
A: There are a bunch of leaders in the Chargers locker room, but if I had to choose an unsung one that you didn’t mention, it would have to be Jarret Johnson. Every locker room needs a guy like Johnson. He leads by example, but is also a well-respected voice not only for the defense, but the offense as well. Jordan Beane and I had a chance to talk with him before the team broke mini camp last month, and our interview will be in next week’s BoltsCast episode. In that interview alone you can sense his leadership qualities and how smart he is about the game of football. Be sure to get back to me after you watch the interview and let me know what you think!
Q: Who do you think will be Philip Rivers' favorite target this season? Will it be a recent emergence such as Danario Alexander or will Antonio Gates continue his legendary production? - Ian Astalosh from Sydney, Australia
A: First off, thanks for being a fan from the Land Down Under! I’m as intrigued as anyone to see who emerges as Rivers’ so-called “favorite” target in 2013 because it could be anyone. There is a lot to like about our pass-catching weapons. Like you mentioned, Gates is a legend and Head Coach Mike McCoy has said you could put a blindfold on Philip and he’d know exactly where #85 is and how to get him the ball. We saw last season how dynamic Danario Alexander can be, and it seems when a crucial first down is needed, Malcom Floyd comes up with a clutch catch. Then there are other dangerous weapons like Vincent Brown, Eddie Royal, Keenan Allen and Robert Meachem. One storyline I’ll be watching for sure come training camp is which of these weapons emerge as go-to targets.
Q: Can we expect to see any more free agent acquisitions as the start of the regular draws closer? If so, who is on the Charger's radar? – Bobby Gonzalez
A: General Manager Tom Telesco is on record stating that he will scour the waiver wire and see who is available every chance he gets, leaving no stone unturned to improve the team. As a result, there’s a very realistic chance there will be new players joining the roster at some point, though it is way too early to speculate on names. I’m personally most interested to see who gets released during training camps around the league, and if any of those players interest Telesco and McCoy.
Q: Just looked at the training camp schedules open to the public. Can’t wait to come! Which days would you recommend I come to with my kids? – Jonathan Ireland
A: Really, it’s whatever date works for you, but you can’t go wrong with FanFest at Qualcomm Stadium on August 3. If you want more information, visit this page right here for all the details we have right now about training camp. We look forward to seeing you and your family out here!
