The entire Chargers roster took to the streets of San Diego Monday to thank fans all across America’s Finest City. Divided into seven position groups, the team spent the entire afternoon hitting hot spots around the city to surprise and mingle with fans, showing their appreciation for their loyal support.
“This day is our day to say thank you to San Diego,” said Executive Vice President - Chief Executive Officer A.G. Spanos. “We’re proud to be San Diego’s team. We’ve got the entire team out in full force along with the Charger Girls and members of our staff to show our appreciation to San Diego. Really the team is out in force to say thank you.”
General Manager Tom Telesco agreed the day was a special opportunity that the Chargers relished.
“This gives us a great chance to get out in the community and meet people and say thank you to the fans that support us,” he said. “The fans are with us week after week, so the chance to get out and tell them what they mean to us, it’s great.”
The event was an unmitigated success with the players enjoying the rare chance to canvas the entire city and spend hours with fans taking photos and talking about all things Chargers. They even gave away a bunch of game tickets.
“Today was one of the best days of my life,” said Greg Brandt. “For these players to come out and see us and talk about football and also our lives, it was amazing. I’ll remember it forever.”
Starting shortly before 1:00pm, seven team busses departed from Chargers Park to a number of destinations. The running backs visited Old Town where they made tortillas before jumping on the Trolley to visit a local downtown fire station. The quarterbacks, tight ends and specialists started off at the zoo, where they fed the giraffes and spent an hour with fans before heading off to the airport. Hitting the beach were the wide receivers, who rode the roller coaster and walked the boardwalk. They then paid a visit to Sea World where they participated in the dolphin show and dropped in on Shamu. The defensive backs went shopping, joining patrons around multiple malls in Mission Valley before heading off to Boomer’s for a round in the batting cages. Heading north were the linebackers, making a stop at the Sorrento Valley area before ending up at Legoland. The offensive line went south, visiting a couple of stores before taking a plunge at the new Aquatica Water Park in Chula Vista. Finally, the defensive line visited the oncology and pediatric unit at Kaiser Hospital before heading east to Lemon Grove and La Mesa, where they made pizzas at Sanfilippo's.
While the Chargers organization has provided countless memories for the city of San Diego over the years, the team was humbled by the outpouring of support they received today. Long after the event ended and the team arrived back at the facility, the players remained behind, sharing stories of fans they got to meet and places they visited. Without a doubt, "Thank You San Diego Day" is something each and every player will remember long after their careers have ended.
