Ask any player, no matter how many years they’ve been in the league, about their rookie experience and they’ll say it’s like a roller coaster ride .
Luckily for third round pick Keenan Allen and fifth round selection Steve Williams, like they’ve done for the past few years, they have each other to lean on when things get rough.
The two friends and former Cal teammates were drafted back to back by the Chargers and couldn’t be happier to be reunited in San Diego.
“I was excited when I saw he was drafted, more excited than I was when I was drafted to be honest, knowing that I wasn’t going to be out here alone,” said Allen. “It’s going to be just like old times competing against him at practice. That’s what we do. We get after it. I’m happy to have him here.”
In fact, one of the first messages Williams received after being selected was from his former, and now current, teammate.
“We text all the time,” he said. “As soon as I got drafted I had a text from him that said ‘Let’s go kill it!’ We’re ready. We talk about how we’re going to come down here and make things happen.”
As a wide receiver, Allen went up against Williams, a cornerback, every day at practice. They know each other’s tendencies and how to help the other get better.
“It’s a great feeling to have him here,” Williams said. “Not just because he’s a friend, but he’s a great player and he’ll help us get some wins. He’s very savvy and a great route runner. He’s just a good player. ”
So what’s it like for Williams to line up against Allen here at Chargers Park rather than at Cal?
“It’s Déjà vu!” laughed Williams. “It’s like the old days. One-on-one. Let’s see who’s the better player. It’s fun.”
