Exclusive Interview with Steve Williams
Shortly after being selected with the 145th overall selection in this year’s draft, CB Steve Williams out of Cal spoke with Chargers.com for a wide ranging interview. Here’s what he had to say:
Chargers.com: So first off, how does it feel to be a San Diego Charger?
Williams: Oh it feels great. They called me right before they were about to pick and told me they were going to pick me, and I was too excited. I was outside playing catch with a friend and got the call. I ran inside the house and told my mom and sister right away.
Chargers.com: How much contact did you have with the Chargers during this whole process?
Williams: I had talked to them briefly before the draft just one time.
Chargers.com: Who would you compare your game to?
Williams: I’d compare my game to Brandon Flowers. He can tackle and play on the outside or inside. He’s a versatile guy and I feel I am too.
Chargers.com: A lot of people talk about your speed, and you had one of the best 40-yard dash times. Do you feel that your straight away speed translates to the football field well?
Williams: I do. I think it does because I play quick too. I use my speed and quickness to get in front of the receiver. I use my speed to catch up on deep patterns, and use my quickness to cut in front of his breaks.
Chargers.com: Besides speed and quickness, what are the strengths to your game?
Williams: Being a cover man able to cover man to man and being able to tackle guys.
Chargers.com: What do you need to improve upon?
Williams: I’d like to be more physical with my hand s at the line.
Chargers.com: Is there any wide receiver you are looking forward to covering in the NFL?
Williams: I’d say Desean Jackson. I’d like to cover him. He’s super-fast and people say I’m super-fast. I want to see my speed go against his speed.
Chargers.com: You’re kind of lucky that one of your Cal teammates is coming to San Diego too in Keenan Allen. What is your relationship like?
Williams: It’s a great feeling that he’s going to be here. He’s a great receiver and I like facing him in practice. We make each other better.
Chargers.com: Finally, what do you want to let the fans know about you?
Williams: I just want to thank the team, the GM, the owner and all the coaches for drafting me. I’m coming to compete and I just want to make the team better.
