Prospect Profile: Darius Slay
In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2013 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on April 25th.
We continue the series with a scouting report of Mississippi State cornerback Darius Slay.
Name: Darius Slay
School: Mississippi State
Weight: 192 LBS
The 2013 NFL Draft is considered very deep at the cornerback position. Still, only three of the talented prospects will be in attendance at Radio City Music Hall, and Mississippi State’s Darius Slay is one of them.
An All-SEC second team selection in 2012, he enjoyed a solid senior season, recording 40 tackles, six passes defensed and five interceptions, one of which he took to the house for a touchdown.
Slay is an athletic, aggressive corner who likes to use his exceptional arm length to pester receivers. He has good ball skills and quickness, and excels particularly in man coverage. Speed is also one of Slay’s greatest attributes. He impressed at the scouting combine, turning in the fastest 40-yard dash of all secondary players (4.36), and fifth fastest overall.
A bit on the slender side, Slay needs to bulk up and get stronger to be as effective in the pros as he was in college. Nonetheless, he possesses big play ability out of the secondary and warrants a relatively early selection.
40-yard Dash: 4.36
Bench Press: 14
Vertical Jump: 35.5 inches
Broad Jump: 124.0 inches
