Prospect Profile: Xavier Rhodes
In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2013 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on April 25th.
We continue the series with a scouting report of Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes.
Name: Xavier Rhodes
School: Florida State
Weight: 210 LBS
Xavier Rhodes has been sky-rocketing up many mock drafts, and it’s easy to see why. A physical corner at 6-foot-1, 210-pounds, he has the pure make-up talent evaluators look for at the position.
Rhodes is borderline cocky in his abilities, which for a defensive back is a good thing. He uses his thick frame to play a physical brand of ball, imposing his will on all types of wide receivers. Aggressive with his ball skills, he does a good job locating the pigskin in the air even if he doesn’t come down with the pick as often as he should. Furthermore, he enjoys mixing it up in the run game and shows a willingness to do whatever it takes to take down the ball carrier.
At times, however, Rhodes aggressiveness and physicality can be his biggest downfall. He overdoes it at times and gets flagged for his fair share of pass interference penalties as a result. A true press corner, he has shown difficulties at adjusting to zone schemes as well.
Compared by a handful of pundits to the New England Patriots’ Aqib Talib, there is no doubt a need for a player of Rhodes’ talent in the NFL. Not many enter the league with his type of coverage skills, a leg up he has over other prospects as he begins his pro career.
