Prospect Profile: Barkevious Mingo
In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2013 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on April 25th.
We continue the series with a scouting report of LSU defensive end Barkevious Mingo.
Name: Barkevious Mingo
Weight: 241 LBS
Position: Defensive End
Now all he needs to do is put it all together.
With a tall, lean frame (6-foot-4, 241-pounds) that coaches and NFL personnel covet, he is an elite pass rusher who has drawn comparisons to DeMarcus Ware. However, he is mostly an unpolished prospect who has gotten by relying on his natural ability rather than technique. Once NFL coaches get their hands on him and teach him up, the LSU product has the chance to be a special talent.
Mingo’s unique skillset was on full display at the NFL Scouting Combine. He ran the second fastest 40-yard dash time for a defensive lineman, his 4.58 being just one/one-hundredth of a second off the pace. His 128.0 inch broad jump and 6.83 3-cone drill were the best at his position while his 37.0 vertical jump placed second.
Some have questioned Mingo’s decision to declare for the NFL draft after a sub-par season by his standards. This past year as a junior, he had just 38 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. Still, players with his ability don’t come around too often so many expect Mingo to be a top-10 selection in April.
40-yard Dash: 4.58
Vertical Jump: 37.0 inches
Broad Jump: 128.0 inches
3-Cone Drill: 6.84
