Antonio Garay and Mike Willie spent Thursday afternoon at Rancho Bernardo High School, rewarding students who were nominated by teachers for showing outstanding character.
The pair of Bolts met with students for a half hour and enjoyed pizza with them while discussing a wide range of topics including the benefits of strong morals, the similarities between being in high school and playing football, and much more.
“We came here to support the kids and it speaks volumes about them that they were nominated by their teachers,” said Garay. “The values and words that were brought up today are all things that coaches look for in players. So we talked about how people expect us to act a certain way like the teachers expect of them. I think it’s good to come in here and express to the kids that just like them we think of things like being trustworthy and having good character. When it comes off naturally, that’s when you get noticed and that’s what happened today. The teachers noticed something in them and rewarded them for who they are and because they are good people.”
Willie echoed those very same sentiments.
“It was pretty cool to come out here to Rancho Bernardo and spend time with these kids,” said the Chargers wide receiver. “It was cool to get to know the kids and let them know we care about them and how it is important to act with character. Garay and I had a good time.”
