It’s nice to have a Pro Bowl running back in Ryan Mathews.
It’s even nicer when you have two backup running backs that are capable of gaining yards and impacting a game. And that’s exactly what the Chargers have in Ronnie Brown and Jackie Battle.
Mathews finished with 67 yards on 13 carries, including a season-long 31-yard run. Brown finished with 38 yards of six carries and a team-high five receptions for 35 yards, while Battle ran for 20 yards on four carries. All three running backs finished averaging over 5.0 yards per carry.
“I like the way we ran the ball in the second half,” Chargers head coach Norv Turner said. “We ended up rushing the ball – in terms of numbers – really well.”
Brown agreed with his head coach.
“I think this offense allows guys the opportunity to utilize their talents, and tonight we were fortunate enough to mix it up and play some consistent football,” Brown said. “We had a little stretch there, where we weren’t going the way we wanted to, but we were able to bounce back from that. In the fourth quarter, we were able to score some points and do some things we haven’t done in the previous weeks, so I like it when we’re playing the way we’re playing and we’re playing Chargers football.”
Mathews’ 31-yard run came with less than a minute left in the third quarter to put the Chargers in Kansas City territory. Battle rushed for 11 yards on the following play, while Brown added a nine-yard rush later in the drive to set up a 13-yard Malcom Floyd touchdown to put the Chargers up 17-6.
“As an individual, I always believed in myself and I think you should, being on this level you have to,” Brown said. “Your confidence is one of the things that get you through no matter what’s going on. To be able to bounce back from adversity and I think that carried over to the mentality of the football team. When I get a chance to make a play, I just try to take advantage of it and do the best I can and get the guys to believe in me, get everyone to believe in each other.” Read
