Ajirotutu Sparks Team Early On
Newly signed Chargers wide receiver Seyi Ajirotutu had an immediate impact on tonight’s game, sparking an opening touchdown drive with a diving 28-yard reception down the left sideline.
“I’ve been here three days, I’ve practiced once and had two walk throughs,” Ajirotutu said. “I’m just glad that I could come and contribute to this team effort.”
The second-time Charger had instant success on a 3rd-and-5 early in the game when quarterback Philip Rivers threw Ajirotutu’s way to extend the seven play, 80-yard touchdown drive. The grab wasn’t just any regular catch either, but a beautiful full extension snare with a defender draped all over him
“It was the same play that we ran in practice where I went up and dropped the ball,” Ajirotutu said. “Luckily the defense gravitated to (Antonio) Gates and I got a one-on-one match up. Philip threw a great ball and I made the catch.”
Tonight’s game wasn’t the first time Ajirotutu has had to step in and make an impact for an ailing Chargers wide receiver core.
Back on November 7, 2010, Ajirotutu was Rivers primary target with four receptions on 111 yards and two touchdowns in a 29-23 road victory over the Houston Texans.
Without his key catch, which was his only grab of the game, the Chargers aren’t sure they would have won the game.
"He had been here all about 72 hours, and he goes and gets the first ball on the first attempt on a third down, and made a great catch," Rivers said. "That definitely jump started us."
After the game, Chargers head coach Norv Turner recognized his contribution to the win by presenting him with a game ball in front of the entire team.
"I liked the contribution that we got from our newcomers," Turner said. "(Seyi) Ajirotutu signed on Monday and made a big play to get us going."
Although Ajirotutu only had one catch in the game, he knows that there will be many more chances to contribute in upcoming games.
“It got everything started and led to a touchdown which is excellent,” Ajirotutu said. “I’m extremely happy about it and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”
