Wright Returns While Mathews Sits
Shareece Wright returned to the practice field today for the first time since spraining his ankle in the opening minutes of Week 1’s game vs. the Oakland Raiders. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Ryan Mathews, Jared Gaither and Jeromey Clary all sat out, observing from the sidelines. The team will address each player Thursday when the official injury report comes out, but head coach Norv Turner does not expect any of their ailments to be serious.
“I’m confident that they’ll all be able to play,” he said. “But we will give an official injury update tomorrow.”
The good news for the Bolts was the return of Wright, who had a dominant training camp and preseason before injuring his ankle. Still, Turner is tempering his optimism, taking a day-by-day approach with the second-year cornerback.
“We have to see him practice for three days,” he said. “As always with a guy that has an injury, we have to get him through practice and see him in the morning and make sure he doesn’t have a setback. Then we watch him again and make sure he doesn’t have a setback. If he can play I think he would be a guy that would have the chance to become active. He’s become a very good special teams player and he had a good training camp and preseason playing as a corner.”
Wright expressed excitement about returning to the field, but was honest enough to say that he still has certain limitations and is experiencing some pain. Nonetheless, he feels he is able to tolerate any discomfort since he desperately wants to play vs. the Broncos.
“I felt good today,” he said. “It felt good to be back. I’m pushing through it and trying to test my limitations to see how much I could go. I’m not 100% yet, but I’m close enough. There is a little bit of pain still but I didn’t expect it to be 100% by now. There are certain times where depending on the position my foot’s in I feel it, and it causes a little pain, but it’s nothing too serious. As long as I can run and cut, and still come out of my breaks, I’ll be good.”
While Wright still has a long way to go before he is cleared to play Monday night, he fully expects to be in uniform.
“Oh I’ll be out there,” he said. “As long as I don’t have any setbacks this week practicing, I think I’ll be good to go. And it would be great to come back against a quarterback like Peyton Manning. It’s an opportunity that as a DB you live for. To go up against a good quarterback who throws it a lot, it’s an opportunity and it will test just how far back I’ve come.” Read
