Weddle’s ascension to the top of his profession didn’t happen overnight, which is the rule in the NFL and particularly for a position that is so mentally demanding as free safety.
“He’s made the kind of progress you look for,” said Head Coach Norv Turner. “It’s been very steady. He’s done an outstanding job with the position, understanding what you can and can’t do. Sometimes early he tried to do too much. When he plays within the scheme, he has all the ability he needs to be a big-time playmaker. He showed that last year. He very much deserved to be selected to the all-pro team.
“I think what he’s learned is you have to take care of yourself first; take care of your job first. The best way he leads right now is by example. He has become a very disciplined player. The best thing he’s learned is to make plays within the scheme.
“Last year when he signed the contract he signed, along with that comes great expectations. He lived up to those expectations and showed the people that believed in him that it was the right decision.”
Now Weddle comes into the 2012 season at the top of his game, but with a new cast of teammates joining him at safety. Hear more from Eric about his new cohorts in the secondary in the video above.
