NFL 101: Rookie English
Last week I got my first taste of the OCSs (Offseason Coaching Sessions) and I thought the week went great. After minicamp I went home for two weeks and kind of digested what we learned that weekend. When we got back for the OCSs last week, it gave me a chance to see things at full speed after I’d had time to absorb some of the defense.
I’m starting to play at full speed because I’m picking up the defense more and more each practice, and that’s given me a big boost of confidence. I feel like things are really coming together as I get ready for what’s hopefully a strong rookie year.
The veterans are off this week so it’s mainly just the rookies at Chargers Park. We’re working out with Strength & Conditioning Coaches Jeff Hurd and Vernon Stephens, and they’re very good at what they do.
I’m really glad to be in this conditioning program. I’ve worked out hard the last few months, but it’s different than what we’re doing with Jeff and Vernon. Before the draft, I was training for tests and 40-yard dashes and things like that. Now we’re doing drills that will help us on the football field. It’s nice to be doing things that are more football-related.
Today was the first day that I was able to get out and enjoy San Diego a little bit. After our morning workout, a few of the guys went down to Pacific Beach and walked around a little bit. It was a beautiful day. I’m starting to realize that most days are that way in San Diego.
I haven’t started looking for a place to live but I’m going to get on that later this week. For now I’m in the hotel with all of the other rookies. Derry Beckwith is my roommate and we get along really well.
As I work on getting settled in San Diego, there are a lot of little things I’ve got to take care of. Finding a place is at the top of my list, but I’ve got to get a California driver’s license, learn my way around town and just try to get familiar with a new place. I’m going to try to get it all taken care of as soon as possible, but for now my focus is on my job.
This is an important time of year. Over the next month, I’m pushing myself physically to get in the best shape I can. Mentally, I want to become more and more comfortable with our scheme and just continue to grow. Hopefully once fall gets here, all this work will pay off.
